Here's How EnerNOC delivers reliable demand response:

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Commercial, institutional, and industrial customers are unique. EnerNOC has deep “behind-the-meter” expertise across a wide range of vertical industries. Unlike in residential demand response programs, a “one size fits all” solution does not work for this important customer class.

Program Marketing & Branding

We work closely with our utility partners to create program branding and marketing strategies. In many cases, EnerNOC staff work in close partnership with utility account managers to engage customers. In addition, we often coordinate with other demand-side management programs.

Customer Recruitment

EnerNOC’s business development team is a dedicated resource responsible for signing customers into demand response programs. Working closely with utility account management staff in some cases, this team educates customers and enrolls qualified and interested participants in the program by executing participation agreements. As a third party, EnerNOC is not bound to a utility tariff; each agreement is customized based on the customer’s capabilities.

Site Enablement

Once a customer enrolls, EnerNOC installs metering and control technology at the customer site. We then conduct an “acceptance test” so the customer can practice receiving event notifications and following its curtailment plan.

Access to Energy Data

Each participant receives access to an online energy management software platform which presents consumption data in near real time.

Integration with Utility Systems

Working closely with our utility partners, we establish a communications link between the control room and EnerNOC’s Network Operations Center (NOC), and we coordinate the dispatch procedures and protocols to initiate demand response events.

Event Dispatch & Management

From dispatch notification to the end of demand response events, EnerNOC has a fine-tuned event management process. Within minutes of receiving notification from our utility partners, we notify customers and initiate load reduction strategies, we monitor demand response event performance in real time, we “coach” customers as needed throughout events, and we restore loads after events.

M&V and Settlement

Measurement and verification is a critical determinant of the success of any demand response program. We calculate baselines based on actual consumption data, measure load reductions during events, and provide post-event reports to the utility following each event. We administer the settlement process directly with both the customer and the utility.

Ongoing Management

EnerNOC’s demand response resources require ongoing investment and management to ensure event-readiness and reliable performance. For example, we constantly monitor and maintain high levels of network connectivity; we regularly assess customer satisfaction and address any issues that arise; and if customers drop out of the program, we enroll new participants.
