BOSTON, MA, June 5, 2005 – Although ISO New England forecasts adequate electrical supplies to meet peak demand this summer, the grid operator has also cautioned that in the event of unplanned outages or extended hot weather, emergency measures to maintain reliable supplies may have to be employed. One of these measures is to activate its demand response programs, which call on commercial and industrial customers to actively reduce their electric loads during the most critical periods.
Supermarket retailer Big Y is a new demand response program participant for 2005, and has eagerly enrolled its six southwestern Connecticut stores and committed several hundred kilowatts of capacity for this summer. Big Y will enact measures to reduce the stores' demand for power from the electrical grid, such as cutting back non-essential lighting, during ISO New England-specified critical periods.
Gary Kuchyt, Big Y's Energy Manager, said, "With Big Y's new capability for automatic reduction of consumption during peak hours, we are able to help maintain grid reliability in the region and keep electricity on in the homes of our customers. This initiative offers us an additional way to positively affect our local community."
EnerNOC is a full-service demand response solutions provider that helps commercial energy consumers maximize participation in ISO New England's demand response programs. The company manages all aspects of program participation including metering, installation, permitting, enrollment, data and payment reconciliation, and automated load curtailment.
"Southwestern Connecticut's transmission constraints make the region particularly susceptible to reliability problems. Big Y's commitment illustrates its continued dedication to putting its customers first and making a positive impact on its community," said Gregg Dixon, EnerNOC's Vice President of Marketing and Sales.
