BOSTON, MA – EnerNOC Inc., the leading energy management solutions provider specializing in demand response, today announced that it received the 2006 Energy Pioneer Award from Platts, the world's leading provider of energy information.
The Energy Pioneer Award honors strategic vision, innovation, financial commitment, industry leadership and success. As the sole recipient of this award, EnerNOC was recognized by Platts for capitalizing on a ground-breaking opportunity to change the energy playing field.
Although utilities have offered demand response to their largest electricity consumers for decades, EnerNOC Co-founders David Brewster and Tim Healy translated an existing idea into a new concept, focusing instead on smaller commercial and industrial businesses to create a “Negawatt NetworkTM” of distributed energy resources. The team developed an industry-changing Network Operations Center (NOC) that monitors and controls customers’ energy assets, such as lights, HVAC, and generators, in real-time and dispatches these assets remotely in times of peak demand.
“We are honored to receive this distinguished award and are excited about the opportunity to increase national and global awareness of demand response as a proven asset in creating cleaner, more reliable, and more efficient electricity markets,” says Brewster. “By expanding the opportunities for demand response to participate alongside traditional supply-side resources, we can begin to address some of our most serious economic and environmental problems.”
EnerNOC’s innovative demand response services have fueled the company’s rapid expansion since its inception in 2001. This year alone, following a series of nationwide heat waves, EnerNOC managed 39 demand response events throughout New England, New York, PJM, and California to successfully preempt blackouts and lower wholesale energy prices.
Driven by a passion for customer satisfaction and the pursuit of greater global energy efficiency, Healy is excited about EnerNOC’s mission. “We have a saying here that the greenest kilowatt-hour is the one never used,” says Healy. “If you look at the growth of energy consumption in the U.S. alone, it’s clear that we have a real crisis on our hands. The reliability of our electric power system presents serious economic and political challenges, and the need for fossil-fuel-burning power plants is a real environmental challenge. By monitoring consumption and cutting nonessential electricity in times of peak demand, EnerNOC helps mitigate these challenges to ensure a stable grid and a greener future.”
Now in its eighth year, the Platts Global Energy Awards is described as the “Academy Awards” of the energy industry. This year, a judging panel of international energy experts comprised of energy ministers, national regulators, past and present heads of major energy companies, and leading academics evaluated more than 200 entrants to select the finalists for each category. Platts selected EnerNOC as the top pioneer in its class of nine industry-leading finalists.
