CARTERET, NJ and BOSTON, MA – The Energy Planning Network (EPN), Pathmark Stores,
Inc., and EnerNOC, Inc. announced today that Pathmark has been awarded EPN's
"2004/2005 Energy Users Excellence Award for Best Cost Control Initiative."
The initiative, which combined enhanced metering and communications technology,
existing assets, and resourceful execution to realize lower energy expenditures,
was implemented and managed by leading demand response and energy management
solutions provider EnerNOC.
John Hoggard, Managing Director of the Energy Planning Network,
applauded the east coast grocer for the effective employment of its
demand response strategy. "Pathmark's award submission clearly
demonstrated a well-executed, innovative project that added economic
benefit directly to the company's bottom line," he said. "Further,
it was apparent that this initiative will continue to add value over
time well beyond the cost-savings."
Pervasively battling against rising energy costs across the 8
million square feet and 73 MW's of electric demand represented
in Pathmark's portfolio of stores, Energy Manager Steve Castracane
knows the importance of proactively seeking and choosing effective
cost saving opportunities. "EnerNOC helped us realize exceptional
value by integrating demand response into our overall energy strategy,"
he said. "We've gained insight into our energy use that we never had before."
EnerNOC's turnkey demand response solution enables Pathmark's
participation in the New York Independent Systems Operator's (NYISO)
Installed Capacity/Special Case Resource (ICAP/SCR) Program. The demand
response program, designed to help relieve electrical system constraints
during critical periods, pays participants for electric demand they commit
to reduce when called upon by NYISO to do so.
Twenty-three Pathmark stores were initially equipped with EnerNOC's
system which meters and controls both generator output and facility electric
usage and allows for communication between EnerNOC's Network Operations
Center (NOC) and the facilities' assets through the Internet and the company's
wireless network. Upon an event notification by the NYISO, the NOC automatically
and remotely reduces the amount of load Pathmark takes from the grid by
starting on–site generators, switching load from the grid to the generator,
and shutting off lighting load by putting the store into night set-back mode.
During a demand response event, half of the interior lighting is
turned off in addition to the load supplied by the generator. This load
is typically managed by Pathmark's existing Building Environment and
Refrigeration Energy Management System, but can be independently controlled
by the NOC using control wire that is run in parallel to the existing equipment.
With this basic strategy, an average of 50 kW can be curtailed at each
store location during demand response events. Pathmark established a
substantial, new revenue stream with its participation in 2004 and in
2005 has continued to expand the initiative across its chain as well
as increased the benefits per store by rewiring additional loads for
greater curtailment potential. Since the award was made, Pathmark
agreed to include more than 25 additional stores in New York's ICAP/SCR
Program resulting in increased annual revenue from the program.
Kathy Loftus, EnerNOC's Director, Business Development added that
Pathmark also receives many ancillary benefits for its participation
in addition to the revenue streams. "Pathmark's energy consumption
has become much more transparent due to real-time monitoring and
information availability through EnerNOC's secure Internet customer
portal. This transparency allows for remote identification and
correction of failures, faster maintenance dispatch, custom control
schedules, targeted efficiency upgrades, and more effective energy procurement."
Further, by participating in the demand response program, Pathmark
demonstrates its commitment to the communities it serves and provides
additional awareness of the need for conservation at customers' homes
during times of peak demand.
Steve Castracane said, "By far the most exciting aspect of
this initiative is that it gives Pathmark an additional opportunity
to support our communities. When we are shutting our lights off,
we are directly impacting the local supply of electricity and helping
to keep it flowing to the homes of our customers."
The award will be officially presented by EPN to Pathmark's Steve
Castracane at its 7th Annual Large Energy Users Summit in Berlin,
Connecticut on November 3rd and 4th.
