What is Commissioning?

Commissioning is the process by which engineers optimize equipment and systems within a building. This commissioning analysis can include the Building Management Systems, HVAC, lighting, and controls equipment. In a thorough commissioning project, all of this equipment is tested to verify desired functionality. By commissioning a building, the business or organization can identify any insufficient areas of functionality.

Commissioning can occur within a new building that is just being constructed, or an existing facility can be tuned up through commissioning services at a later date. These commissioning projects ensure that buildings are running at maximum efficiency. EnerNOC’s energy engineers conduct thorough site reviews, identify major sources of energy consumption, and deliver detailed analysis of systems and equipment performance. The overall goal of commissioning is to make sure that building equipment works better. Commissioning projects deliver recommendations for reducing operational and maintenance costs, present measures that will bring equipment to its proper operational state, and improve occupant comfort while reducing complaints about mechanical issues.
