Position Description:
EnerNOC has an immediate need for a Network Administrator to work in our Network Operations Center (NOC).
The Network Administrator’s primary responsibility at EnerNOC will be to configure and monitor data communications at customer sites. The Network Administrator will have excellent customer service skills, experience in Service Level Management, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growing company. The ideal candidate will have a record of taking initiative and demonstrating the project management skills necessary to develop and implement improvements to our equipment and processes within our 24x7 Network Operations Center NOC.
The mission of the NOC is to provide capacity to the grid by reducing customers’ electricity consumption when needed on an emergency basis. We execute this mission by developing appropriate protocols, validating them with rigorous testing, and then executing them flawlessly when called.
In order to provide this capacity, we meter energy demand at each of our 2000+ customer sites and, at many sites, we use this connection to remotely reduce our customers’ energy consumption. A robust and highly available network, therefore, is the foundation of our business and it is critical for this network to be operational at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
The Network Administrator will perform 3 primary functions:
1. Ensuring connectivity and data quality
- Monitoring our network of 1400+ remote devices that communicate via the cellular, DSL and the customer’s LAN and VPN connections.
- Configuring VPN site-to-site tunnel communications with customers.
- Configuring Cisco PIX firewalls.
- Troubleshooting connectivity issues.
- Performing root cause analysis and developing plans for improvements to our networking strategy.
- Configuring communications devices.
- Identifying, correcting, and/or escalating data quality issues with sites, energy meter data, and contact information.
- Developing and implementing process improvements within our 24x7 NOC team.
2. Providing exceptional service to internal and external customers
- Providing day-time coverage as part of our 24x7 service desk.
- Providing access to and support for PowerTrak, our Demand Response and Energy Management software.
- Responding to and/or escalating customer questions about Demand Response participation.
- Responding to customer support requests via phone and email.
- Updating customer contact information.
3. Executing demand response events
- Learning Demand Response protocols and program rules.
- Participating in Demand Response event training and simulations.
- Executing Demand Response events.
Further, the ideal candidate will find ways to increase operational efficiency by inventing ways to streamline operations and communicating ideas to the operations and engineering teams. The Network Administrator will become an expert in EnerNOC’s core operational processes, and will develop a deep understanding of the issues surrounding load curtailment, emergency backup generation, and demand response programs across the nation.
During demand response events, our commercial and industrial power providers rely on us to notify them immediately, to monitor and support their load curtailment activities, and in many cases to remotely control their equipment and power generation during potential blackout situations. The activities of our NOC must therefore be executed flawlessly.
Required Qualifications/Skills/Education:
- BA/BS in computer networking, engineering, computer science or other technical field.
- 5-10 years as a Network Administrator, IT specialist, Level 2 or 3 Network Support Technician, or other similar experience.
- Excellent networking and computer skills, including experience with cellular communications, routers, firewalls, network address translation, and VPN.
- Experience with Service Level Management.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Desire to learn new technologies.
- Ability to manage high-stress situations calmly and effectively.
- Self-motivation and the ability to work in a fast paced, forward moving environment.
Desired Qualifications/Skills/Education:
- Masters in computer networking, engineering, computer science or other technical field.
- CCNA and/or CCNP certifications.
- Knowledge of or certifications in ITIL.
- Experience with energy management, power generation, and related technologies.
