Staffing Update: Wrapping up 2006 |
| |
Green-Green Home Energy Efficiency Incentive Program
EnerNOC's Green-Green Program helps employees minimize their personal
impact on the environment by encouraging commitment to energy efficiency.
The tiered program rewards completed home energy efficiency upgrades such
as replacing inefficient appliances with ENERGY STAR-labeled substitutes,
environmentally-friendly commuting, and support of others to achieve
greater energy efficiency.
The many employees taking advantage of this program are not only reducing
their personal carbon footprints, but also lowering their energy bills and
making their homes more comfortable places to live.
2nd Annual Battle of the Bands
EnerNOC's 2006 Battle of the Bands is slated to be bigger, louder, and
even more entertaining than ever before. Heavy recruitment of new employees
with vocal and musical talent began immediately after the 2005 event and
this year, three employee bands will headline the entertainment at EnerNOC's
Annual Holiday Party.
Challengers Load Reduxxxion and Third Rail
will attempt to unseat the 2005 Battle of the Bands winner and crowd favorite,
EneROCK, who have retained all of last year's talent and convey
confidence in their chance at victory again this year. Read our next edition of
EnerNOC-On Demand to find out who claims the 2006 title.

Reflections on the "Word of the Year"
Written by David Brewster, President |
| |
|
| Just as Time Magazine selects a
"Person of the Year" and Sports Illustrated selects a
"Sportsman of the Year," the publishers of the New Oxford
American Dictionary select a "Word of the Year." Believe
it or not, the Word of the Year for 2006 is "carbon
neutral."
Disregarding the fact that it is two words, the rise of "carbon
neutral" to Word of the Year status shows just how important
and universal the recognition of global warming has become. Oxford
University Press explains: "Being carbon neutral involves
calculating your total climate-damaging carbon emissions, reducing
them where possible, and then balancing your remaining emissions, often
by purchasing a carbon offset: paying to plant new trees or investing in
'green' technologies such as solar and wind power."
In the press release announcing the Word of the Year, Oxford University Press
cites a CBS News/New York Times poll from May 2006, in which 66 percent
of respondents agreed that global warming is a problem that is causing
a serious impact now.
Another indication of just how mainstream and important the
movement to reduce environmental impact has become is the recent
commitment by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. to increase the efficiency of its
vehicle fleet by 25 percent over the next three years and to eliminate
30 percent of the energy used in its stores. Wal-Mart's CEO, Lee Scott,
stated, "By working together, we can help each other save money,
reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pass the savings on to our customers.
Sustainability is good for the environment, and it's also good for business."
EnerNOC and its customers continue to work hard to reduce energy
costs and the environmental impact of our nation's ever growing appetite
for energy. As you will read throughout this newsletter, we have recently
been recognized for some of these efforts. For example:
- Verso Paper, an EnerNOC customer based in Memphis, Tennessee, was
recently awarded the 2005/2006 Energy Users Excellence Award by the
Energy Planning Network for the innovative demand response strategies
that Verso and EnerNOC have implemented at Verso's Bucksport, Maine mill;
- Adobe Systems Incorporated, an EnerNOC customer based in San Jose,
California, is soon to be recognized for its work to make its headquarters
the first existing building to receive a Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certification. Adobe is receiving
this honor in part for its active participation with EnerNOC in California's
Demand Reserves Partnership Program; and
- Internally, EnerNOC has launched several environmentally focused
initiatives, including our Green-Green Program, which provides incentives
for employees to implement energy efficiency measures in their homes, and
our Hybrid Vehicle Incentive Program. In addition, we also have become carbon
neutral as an organization.
EnerNOC continues to prove that demand response serves as an excellent
gateway for end users to engage in more complex energy management endeavors.
We have seen that the real-time energy data that end users receive as a
benefit of participating in demand response gives them a much better
understanding of how, when, where, and why their facilities consume energy.
In addition, the new revenue streams generated from demand response can be
reinvested to implement energy efficiency projects that further reduce
energy costs.
EnerNOC believes that, while the U.S. government has been reluctant
to pass mandatory standards to curb carbon emissions, a carbon constrained
world is coming. Over 150 nations have already entered into a global treaty,
called the Kyoto Protocol, to minimize greenhouse gases thought to cause
global warming. It is just a matter of time before the U.S. follows suit
in one form or another, and some states are already taking the lead.
Not surprisingly, many companies are taking leadership positions in measuring
and managing their greenhouse gas emissions, partly because they anticipate
stronger restrictions but also because doing so makes good business sense.
These voluntary efforts have resulted in some exciting developments such as
the Chicago Climate Exchange and the Environmental Protection Agency's
Climate Leaders program. EnerNOC is starting to work with some of these
proactive companies through our CarbonTrak® platform to start mapping
greenhouse gas emissions and monetize the credits that result from demand
response and energy efficiency/conservation measures.
We are excited for continued public and private collaboration to drive
innovations that will further reduce climate-damaging emissions. You never
know, the New Oxford American Dictionary's Word of the Year for 2007 may
just be "demand response."

EnerNOC Customer Verso Paper Wins Demand Management Initiative Award |
|
The Energy Planning Network (EPN) awarded Verso Paper with its "2005/2006 Energy
Users Excellence Award" in the Demand Management Initiative Category at its Annual
Large Energy Users Summit in Austin, Texas on October 26 and 27.
Verso Paper is one of the leading North American suppliers of coated papers, which
are used primarily in media and marketing applications, including catalogs, magazines,
and commercial printing applications. The company uses demand response at its Bucksport,
Maine mill to return in excess of 50 MW's of usable power to the grid when requested by
the Independent System Operator of New England.
Verso Paper, dedicated to integrating sustainability into all aspects of its
business, recognizes that more effective energy use is a large lever to improve its
overall environmental impact. Verso Utilities Manager Glenn Poole commented, "Our
commitment to energy management is vital to our role as a sustainable supplier to our
customers and we are proud to be recognized by our peers for our efforts."

PJM's Synchronized Reserves Market Opens to Demand Response; EnerNOC is First Participant |
|
EnerNOC again demonstrated leadership in the demand response industry by
becoming the first Curtailment Service Provider to participate in PJM's Synchronized
Reserve Market. PJM recently opened its market to demand-side resources, allowing
demand response to compete equally with generation in an organized wholesale
electricity market.
Synchronized reserve capacity is dispatched in response to sudden and unexpected
events such as power plant or transmission line outages, and must be available within
ten minutes to participate in PJM's market. Through rigorous testing with PJM,
EnerNOC was able to prove that its demand response resources deliver synchronized
reserve capacity with the same speed and reliability as generation.
"PJM Interconnection recognizes EnerNOC as the first Curtailment Service
Provider to participate in the Synchronized Reserve Market," said Andrew Ott,
Vice President of Markets at PJM.
"It is gratifying to once again be first to market and exciting to see the
value of demand response realized as an ancillary service, a market traditionally
served solely by generation assets," said David Brewster, President of
EnerNOC. "We encourage other regional transmission operators to follow PJM's
lead and allow demand response to be utilized to help lower the cost of providing
contingency resources."

Platts Selects EnerNOC as Finalist for Prestigious Energy Pioneer Award |
|
Energy Pioneer, one of 17 categories recognized in Platts's annual Global
Energy Awards, honors vision, courage, innovation, persistence, and success, and
is highlighted by nominees who have identified ground-breaking opportunities to change
the energy playing field. In October, Platts chose EnerNOC as a finalist for the
second straight year.
Although utilities have offered demand response to their largest electricity
consumers for decades, EnerNOC has modernized traditional demand response by using
technology that networks customers' facilities across any region in real-time and
dispatches them when and where necessary to avoid blackouts and reduce high wholesale
electricity costs.
Tim Healy, EnerNOC's CEO, is awed by his company's achievements in the last
five years. "We started as two driven, passionate guys with nothing but a
vision and lots of opportunity. Now, thanks to the dedicated, talented group of
individuals at the firm, EnerNOC is a proven and trusted leader in the industry,
not only in deliverable capacity but in influencing demand response policy
throughout the country. It's rewarding to see our progress."
