Regaining Control over Spiraling Energy Costs with PowerTrak®
Written by Terry Sick, Vice President of Engineering and Product Development |
| |
|
|
Commercial and industrial users account for over $160 billion of
annual energy consumption in the United States. Yet, in a survey conducted
by CFO magazine, companies identified energy as their least controllable cost.
Energy has gone from 13% of facility expenses in 1996 to nearly 40% in 2005.
These spiraling costs are forcing energy users to seek solutions to better manage
their energy consumption and procurement activities. However, while many energy
users are now able to choose their energy provider, few possess sufficient
information, expertise, and systems to make informed decisions.
PowerTrak® – a sophisticated Total Energy Management solution
offered by EnerNOC not only collects, stores, communicates and displays energy
data of all kinds (e.g., electricity, natural gas, water, emissions), it also
integrates with other data sources that strongly affect energy consumption and
facility management such as weather, firmographic, (i.e. production, occupancy,
facility area), and market data (e.g., real-time locational based pricing data).
Together this Internet-based, asset management and energy information system
enables commercial and industrial customers to design, implement, and monitor a
variety of strategies to optimize their facility and company operations.
PowerTrak enables customers to:
- Earn revenue from energy assets.
In many parts of
the country, customers are able to participate in demand response programs. During
times of high wholesale electric power demand, when supply is limited and/or expensive,
end-users can utilize PowerTrak to conserve energy or power up their existing
distributed generation systems in order to help stabilize the electric power grid
and mitigate open market price spikes, and track their results.
- Monitor energy consumption in real-time and proactively manage
consumption by setting real-time alarms and actions on consumption levels.
These real-time alarms allow users to avoid significant costs associated with
setting new peak demands or equipment running out of specification for extended
periods that would not be addressed if energy is managed 30 days after the fact.
- Monitor energy usage in real time or near real time, develop better energy
management strategies, allocate costs throughout the organization, track budgets,
and model the impacts of demand management strategies.
Ultimately, decisions are made based on knowledge that is derived from information
that is built upon data. PowerTrak provides powerful tools, such as tariff choice
analyses, to develop optimized energy management strategies.
- Monitor the ongoing performance of equipment to ensure maintenance
procedures are adhered to in order to reduce or eliminate equipment failures or
out of tolerance operation and maintain higher operating efficiencies.
What sets PowerTrak's energy management solutions apart from other offerings
in the industry is EnerNOC's recognition that most commercial and industrial
customers do not simply want another metering solution, software package, or Web
screen – they want a trusted partner to work with them to help identify
and implement energy savings strategies, and demonstrate measurable results. EnerNOC's
team of Certified Energy Managers working in conjunction with PowerTrak, provides
customer-specific energy management recommendations to help customers understand,
control and reduce their energy spending. This combination of technology and expertise
allows customers to achieve 25% or more in total energy savings from a wide variety
of measures that include no-cost behavioral and billing changes to low-cost investments
in new efficiency measures that can have dramatic impacts on the bottom line.
EnerNOC's demonstrated customer energy cost savings (from grocery to high tech to
light industrial facilities) are impressive. If you are interested in a demonstration of
PowerTrak and our Certified Energy Manager services that can deliver significant bottom
line results, call Kevin Crapsey at 513.702.2616.
