Volume: Q3 2004

Greetings!

In the third quarter, EnerNOC further established itself as the leading full-service demand response solutions provider. Highlights included successfully demonstrating capacity in both New York and New England (taking the equivalent of 70,000 households off the grid), and enabling our first customers in California. In addition, we made our Network Operations Center (NOC) even more secure and reliable, and recruited more top-quality talent to our team.

EnerNOC Dials Up New Connectivity Solutions, adds NOC Redundancy

The third quarter was a busy one for the EnerNOC tech department. On the connectivity side, EnerNOC added a creative new auto dial-out solution to its suite of customer options. This will allow EnerNOC to communicate with our customers’ energy assets even when LAN or other broadband connectivity is not available.

On the security side, EnerNOC added redundant functionality to its NOC. With the Democratic National Convention in Boston this summer, EnerNOC decided to accelerate its scheduled security upgrades. In the unlikely event that increased network traffic compromises EnerNOC's ability to communicate with customer assets through the primary NOC in Boston, EnerNOC can instantly shift its locus of control to another location. This total redundancy adds even more confidence to EnerNOC's 24/7 customer monitoring promise.

Ops Team Delivers

In August, EnerNOC participated in ISO New England's (ISO-NE) first demand response audit. EnerNOC and its customers performed flawlessly during the test, delivering 114% of capacity committed to ISO-NE. This performance assured EnerNOC's customers would receive the maximum possible payment from ISO-NE under their EnerNOC agreement. Additionally, EnerNOC filled all of its capacity slots for 2004 in Southwest Connecticut, assuring ISO-NE that the company's marketing, sales, and operational activities were ahead of schedule. EnerNOC enabled its first New York customers in the third quarter, enrolling them in the New York Independent System Operator's (NYISO) demand response program. In September, less than two months after enrolling its first customers with NYISO, EnerNOC participated in NYISO's demand response audit. Although EnerNOC was working with both a new grid operator and a new connectivity protocol, EnerNOC and its New York customers again overachieved, delivering well over 100% of committed capacity.

New Customer Spotlight: Raley's Family of Fine Stores

Shortly after becoming a Demand Reserves Provider in the State of California in June, EnerNOC successfully brought its first west coast customer into its network.

Raley's Family of Fine Stores, headquartered in West Sacramento, CA, has committed more than 70 sites representing a total capacity of 5 MW to the California Power Authority's Demand Reserves Partnership program. EnerNOC manages these assets through its Network Operations Center to ensure Raley's fulfills its obligations to the program.

Raley's is a privately-owned supermarket chain located in Northern California, Nevada, and New Mexico. Its participating facilities are sited within one of California's "Big Three" utility districts, Pacific Gas & Electric.

As the first participating grocer in the state, Raley's is excited for the opportunity to help minimize power crises throughout the state without compromising the safety of the food it provides its customers.

EnerNOC Begins Work with National Grid's Mass Electric

During the third quarter, EnerNOC established a service and technology agreement with National Grid and its subsidiary Massachusetts Electric. EnerNOC provides this distribution company with an outsourced DR solution to help them alleviate distribution network congestion in certain regions of their grid in Northeast Massachusetts.

EnerNOC's customers are automatically notified by EnerNOC when National Grid/Mass Electric is in need of demand reduction in a targeted area of their system. Our service helps National Grid/Mass Electric defer capital expenditures and ensure reliability in their service territory. We expect to expand this activity with National Grid in the future, and extend this valuable service and technology solution to many more distribution utilities in the future.

EnerNOC Gets a Marketing Makeover

In our quest to be THE leading Demand Response Solutions Provider, EnerNOC has rolled out a new identity and branded position to help communicate this vision to the world. The visualization of our messaging begins with the new EnerNOC logo and added tagline get more from energy SM (see below for an example).

These elements serve as a base on which to build an easily recognized, professional brand in the DR industry. In short, the messages we are focused on communicating are:

  • EnerNOC is THE thought leader in the industry.
  • EnerNOC differentiates by bringing real benefits to real customers here and now by understanding customer needs, customizing solutions specific to those needs, and exceeding expectations through delivery.
  • In addition to what you see here, an expanded line of marketing materials continues to develop in support of positioning EnerNOC as premier thought leaders and flawless executors in the industry.
